The class of 2011 registration is nearly complete and the next step for the class of 2012 is fast approaching. High achieving sophomores have several paths to choose from in their transition to academics for upperclassmen.
Those choices were presented Tuesday by Vice Principal Richard Beck to a group of more than 100 parents and students.
The main purpose of the night was to compare and contrast the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs. Instructors from both were present to answer specific questions following the general overview.
High turnout for the night alluded to the growing interest for accelerated academic opportunities for Amat students, especially those that are already exploring college options.
“Applying to college is so different now,” a parent said. “In the late 80’s I took challenging classes that I could and was bound for UCLA. Nothing is certain in this new competitive arena,” said one sophomore parent.
College was something on everyone’s mind especially in chatting with student representatives present at Tuesday’s event.
The array of choices caused many to speculate as to which would have greater influence in the university admissions process. However, Mr. Beck emphasized that the differences between the programs did not place one over the other.
“Colleges look for a student that challenges him or herself in his environment not a specific course load,” said Mr. Beck.
Most parents departed with a greater understanding of the options and all that they would have to consider when sophomore registration opens next Tuesday.
