Teamwork brings league title for X-Country

IRWINDALE — The boys and girls cross country team went home as champions after the Del Rey League finals last Wednesday sealing their positions as the No. 1 teams in their CIF division.

Through all their achievements, many of them have admitted that they do not have the best relationship with running.

For some the hard work and pain is not put in solely for the joy of running.

The friendships and unity of the team is a common reason as to why many of them enjoy the sport.

“I keep running because all of my good friends are on the team,” senior Briana McGee said. “In the end having their support makes it all worthwhile.”

The team’s encouragement through a race often helps them get through difficult times while running.

“During the race, even though I know that I am exhausted, I try to hold on a little longer to get a better time,” said sophomore Ally Palamino. “The support of my family and team helps me push through.”

Senior Fernando Gonzalez echoed Palamino’s feelings.

“[The team] helps to push me to be better and helps me persevere to finish strong,” Gonzalez said.

Still, others have a sense of gratification from running that serves a motive to keep going.

“I like running because it challenges me to push my body farther than any other sport and also relieves stress at the same time,” junior Robbie Santoyo said.
