Kids stretch out at Bishop Amat’s first Youth Spirit Night of the school year

Young students gathered on the night of Sept. 12 to show the football game’s audience what they had been working hard for.

Dozens of young children felt nervous Friday, Sept. 12, as they performed at Youth Spirit Night. Those children had practiced for a long time and seemed very well prepared and excited to perform. They performed enthusiastically and gracefully and did a wonderful job.

“The Youth Spirit Night is an opportunity where kids can learn the routine of our performance groups,” said Ms. Elizabeth Deines, the Pep Squad Moderator. “They get to perform with them on the track for the first half of the game, then at half time they get to actually take the field during the halftime show with the dance team, the band/twirlers and perform.”

Ms. Deines said the event, while not necessarily recruiting, can help bring in students.

“Hopefully when they are looking at high schools, they remember the times they had with us and consider coming to Amat, and possibly trying out for our programs as well,” she said.

This is true for Christina who said her older daughter, Analisa Matutte, a freshman at the school, participated in a dance clinic before starting school at Bishop Amat. Her six-year-old daughter, Isabella, participated in the event two weeks ago.

“I’ve been coming to these for the past couple of years,” Christina said. “I used to bring my oldest who’s on the dance team now. So thats how I heard about it.”

Youth Spirit Night consisted of more than just a halftime performance two Fridays ago. The youth dedicated themselves to making sure the audience enjoyed their performance. They spent long hours the previous Saturday learning their routines and trying to perfect it in time for the game that Friday.

Youth Spirit Nights have been going for over a decade. Amat has turned this event into a tradition. The families really look forward to it  and enjoy it as well.

“It’s just yet another way that Amat stretches its arms open to the community, to welcome anybody that wants to be a part of what we have going on here,” Ms. Deines said.
