WWE fans everywhere tuned in on Sunday, April 6 to watch the biggest event in sports entertainment, Wrestlemania 30.
This Wrestlemania had one of the most shocking, if not the most shocking, WWE moment ever.
As usual, WWE legend and future hall of famer The Undertaker was defending his undefeated streak at Wrestlemania, which prior to the event was at 21-0. The challenger this year was his old rival and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar. The build up to the match over the past month felt rushed and unsatisfying, so unlike the last five matches, fans had no belief that the streak would end.
The match was sluggish and unentertaining, which was surprising considering The Undertaker’s annual Wrestlemania match rarely failed to be one of the best of the year. Eventually Lesnar landed his third F5 and the referee gave the three count.
The crowd fell silent for what felt like forever as manager Paul Heyman rushed to Lesnar’s side and celebrated. The announcer eventually declared Lesnar the winner of the match which was met with boos. Most fans however, were too shocked to react in a conscious way.
Like many wrestling fans, The Undertaker was my hero growing up. While wrestlers like John Cena, Stone Cold, Shawn Michaels and The Rock were getting the biggest cheers, I was always betting on the Undertaker. I looked forward to seeing him eventually retire with the streak intact and couldn’t wait to see him be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame which would act as his story book ending.
It was then that the WWE destroyed my and many other fan’s childhoods. We watched our tired, beat up and old hero be defeated in a match that was the worst of the night. What was worse was that the streak was broken by a part-time wrestler instead of a fellow legend or up and comer.
After multiple attempts to stand up after suffering a concussion during the match, The Undertaker stood up to the applause of the crowd. Fans chanted “Thank You, Taker” while the Undertaker fought back tears and fans did the same, some unsuccessful at it.
The Undertaker was the last remaining active Wrestler who appeared on the first broadcast of Raw so his leaving marks the end of an era. Wrestlemania 30 was heavily spent reminiscing on the WWE’s past. The Undertaker will likely now become a thing of the past to remember.
