LA PUENTE- The Bishop Amat Lancers’ defense held strong while Koa Haynes led the team to victory over the Charter Oak Chargers, 45-21, Friday night at Kiefer Stadium .
The Lancers’ defense started off strong by forcing the Chargers to punt on their first drive, but blocked the punt which was picked up and scored by sophomore Aaron Austin.
The Chargers handed over the ball to the Lancers after a turnover on downs and the Lancers took advantage of the opportunity with junior Anthony Camargo running the ball for a 70-yard touchdown.
Sophomore Trevon Sidney intercepted the ball proving the Lancers’ defense strength on the field.
After shutting down the Chargers’ offense thus far, the Lancer defense was unable to stop senior Todd Greene from catching a short pass and running into the endzone for a 44-yard touchdown.
Both defenses proved worthy of being able to stop each other up until the middle of the second quarter when the Lancers scored an apparent touchdown, but was called back on a holding penalty.
The Lancers later fumbled the ball in the redzone and was recovered by Charter Oak. However, Sidney quickly intercepted the ball and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown, extending the Lancers lead, 21-7.
Charter Oak scored just before the end of the half on a hail mary pass which was deflected by Sidney and ended up in the hands of senior Donavin Washington.
The Lancers came back out on the first drive of the second half looking to find the endzone, but would have to settle for a field goal instead.
Haynes connected with junior Brandon Arconado on a 44-yard touchdown, giving the Lancers a 31-14 lead.
After Adrian Ortega had three interceptions earlier in the season, Sidney also recorded his third interception of the game returning it to the Chargers’ 3.
The Lancers turned defense into offense with a 3-yard Ortega run for another touchdown.
Haynes hit up junior Isaac Archer for a 14-yard touchdown pass, killing any chances of a Chargers’ comeback.
After the Lancers put in the second team, Charter Oak was able to score a late touchdown.
The Lancers will play their rivalry game against the St. Paul Swordsmen away on Friday night.
