Bishop Amat students and faculty evacuated their classrooms and stepped into 90-plus-degree temperatures on the shadeless football field Tuesday to practice the disaster drill. Students said they feel like Amat holds the disaster drill every year on which seems to be the hottest day.
“I pray that next year it not be as hot and have students that will cooperate so that we can handle this more prosperously,” junior Jazmyne Flores said.
Bishop Amat holds the disaster drill every year to practice what would happen if there a real disaster while students were on campus.
If there’s an earthquake or fire or some other natural disaster, student would go out on the football field with their homerooms and literally stand in the heat as if it were a real emergency.
While students agree with the need for a disaster drill, they also have many complaints about the heat.
“The Heat was unbearable on the football field,” said freshman Carlie Ortega.
Many Bishop Amat students agreed with her.
Freshman didn’t know what to expect from the drill, but all they could say was that it was really hot.
“We hold these every single year?” freshman Aleyah Mungia asked.
Some members of the junior class called the drill a pain.
“It was an inconvenience to all of us, we all know what to do when there is an emergency,” junior Jazmyne Flores said.
Members of the senior class tried to be practical with what would happen in case of a real disaster.
“The things that we go over during this assembly obviously aren’t going to go that way if it were a real emergency, we would all be freaking out,” senior Joni Gener said.
