Rev. Jose Gomez, archbishop of the Los Angeles Diocese, celebrated mass at Bishop Amat on Friday and granted the school an extra day off.
After having the September mass canceled three weeks ago, due to excessive heat waves, the mass of the Guardian Angels was incorporated into a special 50 min. class schedule.
Students and faculty gathered into the gymnasium during the last block of the day instead of the usual third block.
Archbishop Gomez made his first visit to Bishop Amat since moving to Los Angeles last year.
He used the homily as a way of introducing himself to members of his archdiocese.
Archbishop Gomez explained that since he’s moved from San Antonio he has become a Lakers fan, which drew laughter and approval from the students.
In addition, he spoke about guardian angels. Everyone has one, he said, and they don’t have wings.
The mass included a memorable performance from the choir.
On the following school day, Principal Mr. Richard Beck announced the day off, awarded by the archbishop, will be Jan. 7, 2013, adding an extra day to Christmas Break.
