Bishop Amat High School held their first Christian Service Program workshop on Tuesday.
The Christian Service Program requires all students to complete 20 hours of service each year in order to graduate.
This program separates the service hours into categories: Religion Department Project, Service Across the Curriculum Project, School Community Service, Faith Based Community Service and Community Based Service. Each student must preform at least four hours for each category.
The Lancers went to their Homeroom in place of their 3rd block class. Each teacher acted as mentors and were assigned four students from each grade.
They explained the program and gave ideas for available service programs such as, Meals on Wheels, Adopt a Grandparent and many others.
Teachers, such as Mr. Garcias, believe that this is an opportunity for students to get involved in the community.
“I’m excited for teaching students to enjoy serving others,” said Mr. Garcias. “We want students to be aware of christian responsibility to care for others, to be generous of time, and to be grateful of the blessings that God gave us.”
In addition, students, such as Sophomores Frank Vierra and Alejandro Payan, are showing a positive feedback towards the new program.
“I liked the program because it showed us which service programs are available for us,”said Vierra.
”I think that its nice that we are serving the community,”said Payan.
Mr. Garcias hopes that volunteering will become a habit for the students and continue to volunteer even after they graduate.
