Defense propels Lancers to a comeback victory at Sierra Canyon
After a rough start with the Bishop Amat defense giving up 28 points in the first half, the Lancers erased their 14-point deficit during the second half and shut out the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers in two quarters and two overtimes.
The Lancers’ defense prevented the Trailblazers’ offense from continuing to score in the second half, during their game Friday night against Sierra Canyon in Chatsworth.
Isaac Ochoa kicked the winning field goal that sent the crowd into an outburst.
During the first two quarters, the Lancers’ defense had a rocky start, which put the team behind by 14 points. After giving up 28 points in the first half, the Lancer defense made some significant changes and did not give up a single point in the second half.
Brandyn Wetherspoon, a junior cornerback, scored a defensive touchdown during the third quarter, which helped the Lancers push for a victory. Lancers began to gel as a cohesive mindset which gained them a win.
Without Wetherspoons significant pick-six at the latter half of the game, the Lancers would not have gained the momentum and confidence needed to obtain the win at the end of the game.
Sophomore quarterback Frankie Villalbazo showed off his skills during the second half with a total of 104 passing yards. This was Villalbazo’s first game as a Lancer, where he was able to conduct the offense effectively to contribute to the team’s 17 point comeback after the half.
Villalbazo gave insight on how he felt on the field during the thrilling last quarter.
“I wasn’t really nervous when I went out there, I was more excited than nervous,” he said. “Honestly, I was just trying to stay in a calm mindset the whole time.”
The Lancers’ football team will be traveling to Gardena this Friday, where they will be facing the Serra Cavaliers.
