LA PUENTE—Despite a shaky defensive performance, the Bishop Amat Lancers (6-0) defeated the Venice Gondoliers (1-4), 42-20.
The Lancers relied most of the night on junior running back Jalen Moore and junior quarterback Rio Ruiz. Defensively, seniors Michael Juarez, Julian Gener, and Christian Orduno ruled the backfield not allowing any easy completions for the Gondoliers’ quarterback Dean Sabaria.
After Venice’s first drive halted after a failed fourth down attempt, a 38-yard touchdown run by Moore gave the Lancers the lead 7-0.
The Gondoliers next drive was saved by a personal foul committed by the defense, which would lead to a 41-yard catch and then a 1-yard plunge into the end zone to make the score 7-7.
The second quarter began with a long completion from Ruiz to junior Adam Sanchez. A 4-yard pass to sophomore Sal Velasquez made the score 14-7, Amat.
A fumble on the kick return by the Gondoliers would lead to another score by the Lancers with a 3-yard keeper by Ruiz. A missed extra point kept the score 20-7.
However, the Lancers’ next drive resulted in an interception and the Gondoliers took advantage of the mistake with a 13-yard pass to make the score 20-14 Lancers at the half.
The Lancers made up for the sloppy performance in the first half with the first minutes of the third quarter.
After an 88-yard kick off return for a touchdown by Sanchez and a successfully converted two-point conversion and an 18-yard touchdown pass to senior Wallace Gonzales—his first at Amat—the Lancers took a 35-14 lead.
A 41-yard run by junior Zachary Shay, set up Moore’s second touchdown of the game—this one from 5 yards out.
The Lancers led 42-14.
The Gondoliers scored quickly with a 66-yard touchdown pass, but the extra point was blocked making the scored 42-20 Lancers.
Serra League begins for the Lancers next week against the Crespi Celts at Kiefer Stadium.
